This vision provided both spiritual support and essential medical care. His most famous achievement was founding the Royal Flying Doctor Service. This organization was the world's very first air ambulance service. His work changed how people in distant areas accessed help. Today, his legacy continues through several Australian organizations.

Flynn's early life was marked by both challenge and education. He was born on 25 November 1880, in Moliagul, Victoria. His mother died during his birth, so he was raised in Sydney by his aunt. He eventually reunited with his family at Snake Gully near Ballarat. Flynn attended several primary schools before graduating from University High School in Parkville. Because he could not afford university, he worked as a pupil-teacher. During this time, he developed interests in photography and first aid. In 1903, he began training to be a minister through an extra-mural course.

His career in ministry focused on the needs of isolated people. In 1910, he published a book called The Bushman's Companion. He distributed this book for free throughout inland Australia. In 1911, he became a missioner at Beltana, a tiny settlement north of Adelaide. He traveled to many station properties in a wide radius. He provided both practical and spiritual service to these locals. By 1912, he became the first superintendent of the Australian Inland Mission. This organization later separated into Frontier Services and the Presbyterian Inland Mission.

Flynn realized that distance was a major barrier to medical care. He began establishing several bush hospitals to help residents. By 1917, he started looking toward new technologies like radio and aircraft. He received a letter from Clifford Peel, an Australian pilot in World War I. Peel explained the capabilities and costs of available airplanes. Flynn used this information to begin his fundraising efforts. He wanted to use aviation to provide acute medical services. This led to the first flight of the Aerial Medical Service in 1928. This historic flight took place in Cloncurry, Queensland.

Flynn's personal life included a surprising marriage later in his life. He married Jean Blanch Baird, the secretary of the Australian Inland Mission, in 1932. The wedding took place at the Presbyterian Church in Ashfield, Sydney. He was 51 years old at the time of the marriage. Flynn died in Sydney on 5 May 1951, at the age of 70. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1933. His widow, Jean, lived until 1976.

His final resting place is a site of historical importance.

His remains are located near Alice Springs under a large boulder. Originally, the rock came from the Devils Marbles. The Northern Territory Department of Public Works had moved it from a sacred site. After many years of negotiations, the rock was returned to its original home in 1998. A different rock was placed at his grave that was acceptable to the Aboriginal people. The land was proclaimed a reserve in 1957. It officially became the John Flynn's Grave Historical Reserve in 1978.

Many honors commemorate Flynn's massive contribution to Australia.

His face appears on the reverse of the Australian twenty-dollar note. Several places are named after him, including the suburb of Flynn in Canberra. There is also a federal electorate named Flynn in Queensland. The airline Qantas intended to name an Airbus A380 after him. Additionally, the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine created a scholarship in his name. His vision of safety remains active through the Royal Flying Doctor Service today.
