Browning held 128 patents. A patent is a legal right to an invention. He was a pioneer in his field. This means he was one of the first to try new ideas. He helped make many tools work automatically. One way he did this was with a telescoping bolt. This part helps a pistol load itself. His designs were very reliable. Many people used his tools in big wars. One famous design is the M1911 pistol. Another is the heavy M2 machine gun.

He spent his life creating many types of firearms. These included rifles, shotguns, and pistols for both soldiers and civilians. His work was so good that many people call him a pioneer. A pioneer is someone who is among the first to do something new. He changed how many machines work by making them more automatic. Many of his designs are still used all over the world today.

Browning was an expert at making machines work by themselves. He invented a way for a pistol to load its own ammunition. He did this by using a telescoping bolt. This bolt moves inside a part called a slide. This part is found on almost every modern semi-automatic pistol today. He also made a machine gun that used gas to work. This was called a gas-operated system. It was a big improvement over older ways of making guns work.

Browning grew up in a family of makers in Utah. His father, Jonathan, started a gunsmith shop in Ogden in 1852.

John started working in the shop when he was only seven years old. He learned how to build things from his father. By the time he was 13, he made his first rifle. He later started his own company with his brother, Matthew. This company was called the John Moses and Matthew Sandefur Browning Company.

Throughout his life, Browning held 128 patents. A patent is a legal paper that shows you invented something. He worked with many famous companies like Winchester and Colt. One of his most famous designs is the M1911 pistol. The M1911 was the standard pistol for the U.S. military for a long time. He also designed the heavy M2 machine gun in 1918. This machine gun has been used by militaries for over one hundred years.

It is amazing to think how much one person can change the world. You might see a modern pistol and see Browning's ideas in it. His telescoping bolt design is still used in many tools today. Even his shotgun designs, like the Auto-5, were very popular for a long time. He died in Belgium in 1926. However, his inventions stayed behind to help shape modern history.

John Moses Browning was a highly influential American firearm designer. He lived from 1855 to 1926. His work transformed how firearms function for both military and civilian use. Browning is often called a pioneer of modern repeating and automatic firearms. This means he helped develop machines that can fire multiple shots quickly. Many of his mechanical designs remain in use globally today. He held 128 different patents for his inventions.

Browning's most significant impact was on the autoloading of ammunition. Autoloading describes a process where a machine loads its own next round. One major breakthrough was his telescoping bolt design. He used this to create compact and reliable autoloading pistols. He integrated the bolt and the barrel shroud into a single part called a slide. This slide mechanism is now found on nearly every modern semi-automatic pistol. He also developed the first gas-operated firearm system. This system, seen in the Colt–Browning Model 1895, used gas to move the mechanism. It eventually became a worldwide standard for high-power self-loading designs.

Browning's inventions covered many different categories of firearms. He improved single-shot, lever-action, and pump-action rifles and shotguns. He created the Browning Auto-5, which was the first semi-automatic shotgun. For heavy weaponry, he developed several machine guns. These included the water-cooled M1917 and the air-cooled M1919. He also designed the heavy M2 machine gun in 1918. This weapon is often called "Ma Deuce" by those who use it. His designs also included the M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle, known as the BAR.

Browning's career began in his father's gunsmith shop in Ogden, Utah. His father, Jonathan Browning, established the shop in 1852. John began working there at the age of seven. He learned engineering and manufacturing principles through this apprenticeship. By age 13, he had already built his first firearm. In 1878, he co-founded a company with his brother, Matthew. This company was later renamed the Browning Arms Company.

His professional relationships changed the course of his career. Early on, the Winchester Repeating Arms Company bought his single-shot rifle design for $8,000. This began a long partnership where he designed many famous Winchester rifles. However, this partnership ended over a disagreement regarding royalties. Browning wanted to be paid based on how many units were sold. Winchester preferred a single one-time fee. This led Browning to take his new Auto-5 shotgun design to Fabrique Nationale (FN) in Belgium. FN accepted his terms and manufactured the shotgun successfully.

Many of Browning's designs had massive historical significance. The M1911 pistol served as the standard U.S. military sidearm until 1986. The M2 machine gun has remained in active service for over a century. Some of his designs, like the Winchester Model 1894, were incredibly successful. As of 1983, over six million of those rifles had been produced. This is more than any other sporting rifle in history. His work influenced many different companies, including Colt, Remington, and Savage.

Browning's legacy continues through modern manufacturing. Some of his firearms are still made today with only minor cosmetic changes. The Browning Superposed shotgun was his last completed design. It was a premium over-under shotgun design. It was commercially introduced by FN in 1931. Its more affordable version, the Citori, is still manufactured in the 21st century. Browning died in Liège, Belgium, in 1926. Even decades after his death, his mechanical principles continue to shape the world of engineering.
