Although the ship was unsuccessful after hitting a pier, it showed his creative thinking. He also patented a method for casting metal between rotating rollers. This idea was a forerunner to modern continuous casting processes used today.

Bessemer's life was marked by significant honors and lasting recognition. He was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1879 for his contributions to science. He also became a fellow of the Royal Society that same year. While he was very wealthy, earning over a million pounds in royalties, his relationship with Mushet was complicated.
