Early tests involved the DWM Luger, which used 7.65mm Luger rounds. However, these pistols lacked sufficient stopping power for certain combat situations. During the Philippine-American War, soldiers found the .38 Long Colt caliber unsuitable for jungle warfare. This led General William Crozier to authorize new tests for a more powerful handgun. Colonel John T. Thompson eventually stated that a new service pistol should be at least .45 caliber.

In 1906, several companies submitted designs for these new trials. These companies included Colt, Savage Arms, and DWM, among others.

In one test at the end of 1910, a single pistol fired 6,000 rounds over two days. When the gun became too hot, it was even immersed in water to cool it down.
