A man named John Browning designed it. The U.S. Army adopted it in 1911. It was made to replace older revolvers.

This pistol is semi-automatic. This means it can load itself. It uses a special way to work called recoil operation. When the gun is used, gas pushes the bullet out. This force also pushes the slide and barrel backward. They are locked together at first. Then, a small link moves the barrel down. A claw called an extractor pulls the empty casing out. Finally, a spring pushes the slide forward. This move grabs a new round from the magazine.

The gun has many safety parts. These help keep it safe to use. In 1926, a new version called the M1911A1 came out. It had a shorter trigger. This helped people with smaller hands. Even though newer guns exist, some units still use versions of the M1911 today.
