He is best known for inventing the movable-type printing press. This machine allowed people to print books much faster than before. His invention helped start an information revolution across Europe. Because of this, many more people could read literature. It even helped shape big movements like the Renaissance.

Gutenberg's machine worked using many small, individual parts. He created movable type, which are small metal letters used to build words. He made a special metal alloy to cast these letters. This alloy was a mixture of lead, tin, and antimony. The mixture melted at a low temperature to make casting faster. It also created very durable letters that could be used many times.

Gutenberg likely studied reading and math as a young man. He may have even studied at the University of Erfurt. Later, he lived in a place called Strasbourg.

Gutenberg's most famous project was the Gutenberg Bible. He finished this work around the year 1455. He printed about 180 copies of this Bible. Some copies were printed on paper. Other copies were made on vellum, which is animal skin.

To print these, he used a new kind of oil-based ink. He also used a wooden press that worked like a screw press. This helped him press the ink onto the pages evenly.

His invention changed how the whole world shares ideas. Before his press, books were very hard to find. After his invention, the number of books grew very quickly.

You can think of it like a modern printer in your school. Instead of writing every word by hand, the machine does the work. This allows information to travel to many people at once. Gutenberg is still remembered as one of the most influential people in history.
