Bi Sheng was a very important inventor from China. He lived during the Song dynasty between the years 972 and 1051. He was a commoner and an engineer. This means he was a skilled maker rather than a highly educated scholar. He is most famous for inventing movable type. This was a new way to print many books. Printing is now known as one of the Four Great Inventions.

His way of printing worked using small pieces. Bi Sheng made tiles out of fired clay. Each clay tile had one Chinese character on it. He could move these tiles to form words and sentences. He also tried to make movable type out of wood. However, the wooden pieces did not work very well. The wood grains made the ink look uneven on the page. Because of this, people chose to use the ceramic clay tiles instead.

We know about his work because of a scholar named Shen Kuo. Shen Kuo wrote about the invention in a book called Dream Pool Essays. This book was written between 1031 and 1095. It gave many technical details about how the clay tiles worked. Later, a man named Zhou Bida mentioned the method in 1193. He thought Shen Kuo invented it, but Shen Kuo actually credited Bi Sheng. This shows how much people valued the invention in those years.

Many people improved on Bi Sheng's original idea over time. A government official named Wang Zhen made the process faster. He used wood to help set the types more quickly. By the year 1490, a printer named Hua Sui made type from bronze. This was a different kind of metal type. In the Qing dynasty, wooden type became very common. Still, many people used woodblock printing because it was cheaper. Creating a huge set of many pieces could be expensive.

Bi Sheng's name is still remembered in many places today. There is a place called Bisheng Subdistrict in Hubei, China. His invention even reached the stars. In August 2010, the IAU named a crater on the Moon after him. This crater is called the Bi Sheng crater. It sits near the northern pole on the far side of the Moon. He even appears on a stamp from Liberia. His work changed how the world shares information.
