Bi Sheng made a new way to print books. He invented movable type. This means he used small pieces to make words.

Bi Sheng made tiles out of fired clay. Each tile had one Chinese character on it. He could move the tiles to set the type. He also tried using wood for the tiles. But the wood was not as good. The wood grains made the print uneven when wet with ink. So, people used the clay tiles instead.

His work was recorded in a book by Shen Kuo. This book gave many details about the invention. Later, a man named Wang Zhen made the clay types better. He used wood to help set the type faster. By the year 1490, a man named Hua Sui made type from bronze. Printing was one of the Four Great Inventions. Today, a crater on the Moon is named for Bi Sheng.
