He was a master of the organ and the harpsichord. He is known for helping develop the musical suite. A suite is a set of different dances played together. His music was often programmatic, which means it tells a story. For example, one piece describes a dangerous boat trip on the Rhine River.

People value his work because he blended many different musical styles. He was one of the most influential musicians of the Baroque era.

Froberger learned music through many different steps. He likely got his first lessons from his father, Basilius. His father was a singer at the court in Stuttgart. Johann also studied from a large family library with over 100 volumes. Later, he traveled to Rome to study with great masters. He studied instrumental writing with Frescobaldi and vocal music with Athanasius Kircher. These teachers helped him learn how to write complex music. He even learned a special composing tool called the arca musurgica.

His life began in Stuttgart, where he was baptized in 1616. His family had strong ties to the Württemberg court. During his youth, the Thirty Years' War made life difficult in his city. In 1634, he moved to Vienna to work at the imperial court. This was a major change in his life and career. In 1637, his father and sister died from the plague. He and his brother Isaac then sold their father's music library to the court.

Froberger spent much of his life traveling to new places. He visited many important cities like Paris, London, and Dresden. In Paris, he met famous musicians like Louis Couperin. This meeting was important because French styles changed his harpsichord music. He also traveled to Italy twice to expand his skills. While in London, he experienced a very difficult voyage where he was robbed. He even wrote a piece of music to express his sadness about it. These travels helped him bring different ideas back to Vienna.

Much of Froberger's music was kept in private, hand-written books. He did not want his music to be printed for everyone. He only shared his manuscripts with close friends and noble patrons. This included powerful families like the Habsburgs. Because of this, we find his music in beautiful, decorated books. Two famous books are the Libro Secundo and the Libro Quarto. These volumes were made for Emperor Ferdinand III. They contain many pieces like toccatas and suites. Even though he died in 1667, his music is still studied today.
