Jett's musical path began with a series of important steps and challenges. At age 16, she became a founding member of the band The Runaways.

The group included members like drummer Sandy West and guitarist Lita Ford. They released four albums between 1975 and 1979. While the band found great success in places like Japan and Europe, they struggled to find the same level of fame in the United States. After the band ended, Jett sought a solo career. She faced a major obstacle when 23 major record labels rejected her debut album. Instead of giving up, she and producer Kenny Laguna formed their own independent label, Blackheart Records. They used Laguna's daughter's college savings to print their own records.

Jett's career can be divided into several distinct eras of performance and leadership. First, there was her time with The Runaways, where she played rhythm guitar and shared lead vocals. Next came her solo breakthrough with the formation of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. This backing band featured many different members over the years. However, Jett and Laguna remained the only consistent leaders of the group. She also spent time as a producer for other artists. She produced the Germs' only album, titled (GI). She also worked with bands like Circus Lupus and Bikini Kill. This shows her deep involvement in the mechanics of the music industry.

Her early life provided the foundation for her musical interests. She was born Joan Marie Larkin on September 22, 1958, in Pennsylvania. Her family later moved to Rockville, Maryland, and then to West Covina, California. The move to California was vital because it allowed her to pursue music more easily. She received her first guitar at age 13. She eventually changed her name to Joan Jett to achieve a more "rock star" sound. This name change was a deliberate part of building her professional persona. Her interest in the glam rock style grew while visiting clubs in Los Angeles.

Jett's commercial success is marked by impressive numbers and chart achievements. Her 1981 album, I Love Rock 'n' Roll, reached number two on the US Billboard 200. The title track became her signature song and stayed at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven consecutive weeks. This song was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2016. Her 1983 album, Album, earned a gold certification. Her 1988 album, Up Your Alley, reached platinum status. That same year, her single "I Hate Myself for Loving You" became her third top ten hit on the Hot 100. These milestones prove her lasting impact on the music charts.

Beyond her solo hits, Jett has many notable examples of her versatility. She has released eleven albums following her debut. She is also a respected actress who starred in the 1987 film Light of Day. In this movie, she played a musician alongside Michael J. Fox. Critics like Roger Ebert praised her acting skills in this role. She also appeared in the Broadway production of The Rocky Horror Show. Her ability to move between music, film, and theater shows her wide range of talent.

Jett's work connects to the broader history of rock and roll and gender in music. She was one of the first English-speaking rock acts to perform in Panama and the Dominican Republic. Her inclusion on the Rolling Stone lists of the greatest guitarists of all time highlights her technical skill. In 2015, she and the Blackhearts were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This honor recognizes her role in shaping the culture of popular music. Her journey from a rejected artist to an independent label owner serves as a major example of musical entrepreneurship.
