arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A jingle is a very short song. It is used to sell things. These tunes are a way to build a brand. A brand is a name that people recognize.

Jingles often use a catchy hook. A hook is a part of a song that stays in your head. Some jingles use a slogan. A slogan is a short phrase that tells you about a product. Many jingles use bits of popular songs. They change the words to fit the product.

The first radio jingle was for Wheaties cereal. It aired in 1926. Before this, sales for the cereal were low. After the song played, sales went up fast. This success helped the brand grow across the whole country.

In the 1950s, many people wrote jingles. Companies held contests by mail. People could win prizes like cars or soap. Some women made money by winning these contests.

Some jingles last a long time. The Aeroplane Jelly jingle started in Australia. It has been used for many years. The State Farm jingle was made in 1971. Today, many ads use pop music instead of jingles. But these short songs are still a big part of history.
