It serves as the capital of the Somali Region. This role began in 1995 when the capital was moved from a place called Gode. The city is an important hub for the people living in this part of the country.

The name of the city comes from a special kind of sound. In the Somali language, the word "jig-jig" is an onomatopoeic word. This means the word sounds like the thing it describes. It might represent the rumbling noise of an earthquake. It could also describe the sound of water in wells on the edge of town.

This connection to sound helps people remember the name.

History tells us that people have used this area for a very long time. The region may have been part of the Gidaya state as early as the thirteenth century. In 1842, a writer named W.C. Barker mentioned Jijiga as a place where caravans would stop. These caravans traveled on paths between Zeila and Harar. Later, a traveler named Richard Francis Burton visited in 1854. He saw the city as a center for wells used by local Somali pastoralists.

Many different groups of people live in Jijiga today. According to a census from 2007, the city had 203,588 people. Most of the residents are Somali, making up about 82.79% of the population. Other groups living there include Amhara, Oromo, and Gurage people. Most people in the city follow the Muslim faith.

The city also has an international airport named after Bartire Garad Wiil-Waal.

Nature and history have shaped how the city looks and feels. In 2008, a heavy downpour caused the Jijiga River to break its banks. This flood hit several neighborhoods and moved 350 households from their homes. The city has also seen many changes through different rulers. For example, the Italian administration allowed for the building of more mosques. Today, the city remains a central place for the Somali Region of Ethiopia.
