Jiddu Krishnamurti was a significant Indian spiritual figure, speaker, and writer.

He lived from May 1895 until February 1986. His life was defined by a transition from being a chosen vessel for a religious movement to an independent thinker. He eventually advocated for a radical transformation of the human mind. Krishnamurti believed that true understanding could not be found through organized religion or authority. Instead, he urged people to seek truth through their own direct perception.

Born in Madanapalle, India, Krishnamurti grew up in a Telugu-speaking Brahmin family.

His father, Jiddu Narayanaiah, worked for the British colonial administration. Krishnamurti's childhood was marked by physical and emotional challenges. He suffered from recurrent bouts of malaria and was often described as a sickly, dreamy child. At school, he faced difficulties and was sometimes treated harshly by teachers. Despite these struggles, he maintained a profound, uncultivated connection to the natural world. He felt no distance between himself and elements like trees, rivers, and mountains.

In 1909, his life path changed when he met Charles Webster Leadbeater. Leadbeater was a member of the Theosophical Society who claimed to have clairvoyant abilities.

Leadbeater believed Krishnamurti possessed a unique spiritual aura. He proposed that the boy would serve as the vehicle for the Lord Maitreya. In Theosophical doctrine, the Lord Maitreya is an advanced spiritual entity. This entity would use Krishnamurti’s body to communicate as a World Teacher to guide humanity. The Theosophical Society began preparing him for this massive global role.

To prepare him, the Society established the Order of the Star in the East in 1911.

Krishnamurti was named the head of this organization. His upbringing became highly structured and supervised by the Society. He received private tutoring in various academic subjects and religious lessons. He also practiced yoga, meditation, and instruction in British social customs. While he was successful in sports and learned several languages, he often struggled with formal academic schooling. He even attempted university several times but did not complete a degree.

By 1922, Krishnamurti began experiencing painful, seizure-like mystical episodes. These episodes caused a lasting change in how he perceived reality. This internal shift eventually led to a major break from the Theosophical movement. In 1929, he disbanded the Order of the Star in the East. He rejected the idea of being a messiah or a spiritual leader. He famously asserted that "truth is a pathless land." This meant he believed truth could not be reached through any organized doctrine, discipline, or guru. He even advised his listeners not to follow him as an authority.

In his later years, Krishnamurti focused on sharing his insights through "the teachings." He gained significant international recognition during the 1950s. This was aided by the writer Aldous Huxley, who introduced him to mainstream publishers. One of his most famous works, *The First and Last Freedom*, was published in 1954.

He also wrote *Commentaries on Living* and *Krishnamurti's Notebook*. His teaching emphasized a state of "choiceless awareness." He described this as the essence of true meditation, which differs from contrived or practiced techniques.

Krishnamurti's influence continues through various foundations in India, Britain, and the United States. These organizations oversee independent schools based on his specific educational philosophy. His extensive body of talks and writings is still distributed in many different languages.

Shortly before his death, he spoke about the unique intelligence that had passed through his body. He suggested that such an occurrence would not happen again for many hundreds of years. His life remains a study in the tension between organized belief and individual freedom.
