His work has been described in various ways by observers. Some characterize his organization as a new religious movement. Others define it as a non-religious system. He sought to provide a method that could benefit all of humanity. He believed his technique offered a way to resolve unhappiness and discontent. Through his global efforts, he established a vast network of educational and spiritual institutions.

The core of his teaching is the Transcendental Meditation technique. He originally introduced this practice as Transcendental Deep Meditation in 1955. He later renamed it Transcendental Meditation to better reflect its nature.

In the late 1970s, he expanded his teachings by introducing the TM-Sidhi programme. This programme includes specific techniques such as Yogic flying. To ensure the technique could be taught globally, he trained more than 40,000 TM teachers. This massive training effort allowed more than five million people to learn the method. Additionally, tens of thousands have reportedly studied the TM-Sidhi programme.

Maharishi's journey began with a foundation in formal science. He earned a degree in physics from Allahabad University in 1942.

Following his studies, he became an assistant to Swami Brahmananda Saraswati, also known as Guru Dev. This leader was the Shankaracharya, or spiritual leader, of the Jyotir Math in the Indian Himalayas. The Maharishi served as his personal secretary and a favored pupil. He spent years attuning himself to the thinking of his master. He credited Brahmananda Saraswati with inspiring his specific teachings. The Maharishi remained a dedicated disciple until his master's death in 1953.

His background and identity were shaped by Indian social structures. He was born into the Kayastha caste, which is a high-status group of traditional scribes. While some accounts vary regarding his exact birth date, many sources suggest he was born in 1911, 1917, or 1918. Because he was not a Brahmin, he could not succeed his master as the Shankaracharya. Instead, he was charged with the responsibility of spreading meditation to the masses. This mission led him to travel extensively throughout India between 1955 and 1957. During this time, he initially called his movement the Spiritual Development Movement. In 1957, he renamed it the Spiritual Regeneration Movement.

In 1958, the Maharishi announced his intention to bring these teachings to the entire world.

He began his first global tour in 1959, traveling through Burma, Thailand, Malaya, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Hawaii. He eventually lectured in major cities such as London, New York, and Los Angeles. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, he gained significant fame among Western celebrities. Notable figures such as the Beatles and the Beach Boys became his students. This period marked a major expansion of his influence in Western culture.

The scale of his organization reached immense proportions over several decades. He founded thousands of teaching centres and hundreds of schools, colleges, and universities. These institutions are located in several countries, including Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland.

His organization also manages various businesses and charitable groups. These include organic farms, mail-order stores for ayurveda supplements, and health clinics. The financial value of his organization has been estimated between millions and billions of dollars. In 2008, his United States assets were valued at approximately $300 million.

In his later years, the Maharishi engaged in diverse social and political activities. He founded the Natural Law Party in 1992, which ran political campaigns in dozens of countries. In 2000, he established the Global Country of World Peace. This is a non-profit world government organization. He appointed leaders to this organization with titles such as rajas and majarajas, meaning kings and great kings. He eventually moved his residence near Vlodrop in the Netherlands. In 2008, he announced his retirement from all administrative roles. He entered a period of silence until his death three weeks later.
