He studies how money and companies work. He uses math to make models. These models help him think about big ideas. He wants to make sure rules are fair for everyone. He wants to help companies grow without breaking rules.

He focuses on a field called industrial organization. This means he looks at how companies compete with each other. He also uses game theory to understand these battles. Game theory is a way to study how people make choices. Tirole wants to find rules that keep things fair. He wants to make sure new ideas can still grow. These rules help prevent companies from becoming too powerful.

Jean Tirole was born on August 9, 1953. He studied hard in France and the United States. He earned engineering degrees in 1976 and 1978. Later, he earned a Ph.D. in economics from MIT in 1981. He worked as a professor at MIT for many years. Now, he is a professor at Toulouse 1 Capitole University. He also leads important groups in Toulouse, France.

One big idea he studies is the monopoly. A monopoly happens when one company has all the power. This company might raise prices too high. They might also make products with low quality. Tirole says regulators must look at each market closely. Every industry is different and needs its own rules. He also studies how banks take big risks with money. This helps leaders make better choices for the whole world.

He also looks at something called two-sided markets. These are places where two different groups meet. A video game console is a good example. One group of people plays the games. Another group of people makes the games. The platform might be free for players. But, it might charge the makers a lot of money. Tirole helps explain why these prices are so different. His smart work won him the Nobel Prize in 2014.
