He studies how money and companies work. He uses math to make models. These models help him think about big ideas. He wants to make sure rules are fair for everyone. He wants to help companies grow without breaking rules.

Sometimes, one company has too much power. This is called a monopoly. A monopoly can make prices too high. It can also make the quality of goods low. Tirole studies how to stop this. He says rules should look at each business closely. This is because every market is different.

He also looks at how banks work. He found that banks often take big risks. He also studies two-sided markets. These are places like video game systems. One group uses the system, and another group makes the games. The prices for these two groups can be very different.

In 2014, Tirole won the Nobel Prize. This is a very big award for smart work. His ideas help leaders make better rules for the world.
