Jazan is the second smallest province in the country. However, it has the highest population density in the kingdom. This means many people live close together here. The province covers about 13,457 square kilometers of land. It also includes over 200 islands in the Red Sea. One famous group is the Farasan Islands. These islands are a protected area for nature. Many birds fly there from Europe during the winter.

The land in Jazan has many different shapes. The Sarawat Mountains rise high in the inland area. These peaks reach about 3,000 metres. There is also the Al-hazoun forest district. This area has forests mixed with rich pastures. The plains are very good for growing food. Farmers grow coffee beans and cereal grains like wheat. They also grow many fruits like mangoes and papayas.

The weather changes depending on where you stand. The coastal regions are part of the Tihamah. This is probably the hottest place in the country. It can be very humid near the coastal lagoons. Rainfall is very low, with less than 75 millimetres each year.

People have lived in Jazan for a very long time. Research shows settlements went back to the Stone Age. Early people used tools from the Acheulean civilization. They lived by the sea and ate fish and shellfish. Jazan was also a key spot on ancient trade routes. It sat between Yemen and the Levant. Long ago, the region was near many ancient kingdoms. These included the Kingdom of Sheba and the Himyar Kingdom. The people of Jazan often followed their own interests. They were not always ruled by these neighboring kingdoms.

Jazan has been an Islamic Arab territory for a long time. In the tenth year after the migration, a group went to Medina. They met Muhammad and embraced Islam. Later, the region became part of the Saudi Kingdom. King Abdulaziz worked to unify the Arabian Peninsula. A treaty was signed in 1926 with a local ruler. This was called the Treaty of Makkah. After some changes, Jazan officially joined Saudi rule in 1930. It was the last region to join the kingdom. In 1934, a treaty called the Treaty of Taif settled borders.

Today, Jazan is a very important place for business. It is close to the Horn of Africa. This helps with trade and exports. A new special economic zone is being built there. It aims to attract billions of dollars in investment. The sea is also very important for the economy. Jazan produces over 6,000 tons of fish and shellfish every year. This is more than 20% of all fish in Saudi Arabia. The province is also home to millions of farm animals. There are over 2.1 million goats and 1.7 million sheep. People also use the King Abdullah International Airport to travel.
