He worked as a pilot for the United States Air Force. He also studied aeronautical engineering, which is the science of how things fly. Irwin was born on March 17, 1930, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When he was only twelve years old, he told his mother he wanted to go to the Moon. He even thought he might be the very first person to walk there.

This big dream eventually came true.

In 1971, Irwin joined the Apollo 15 mission to the Moon. He served as the Lunar Module pilot, which means he helped fly the part of the ship that lands on the surface.

During this mission, he was the eighth person to walk on the Moon. He also became the first passenger in a Lunar Roving Vehicle. This was a small car used to drive across the Moon's dusty ground. While on the Moon, he and his partner, David Scott, spent over 18 hours doing science work. They even found a very special rock called the Genesis Rock.

Irwin's journey to space began with many years of hard work and study. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1951. Later, he earned two master's degrees from the University of Michigan in 1957. Before joining NASA, he was a test pilot for fast planes like the Lockheed YF-12. He flew many different types of aircraft during his military career. In total, he spent more than 7,015 hours flying. This experience helped him prepare for the difficult job of flying to the Moon.

During the Apollo 15 trip, something unexpected happened to Irwin's health. While working hard without sleep, his heart rhythm became irregular. Doctors on Earth watched him closely using special tools. They noticed a condition called bigeminy, which is a type of heart rhythm change. Even though it was serious, the ship's pure oxygen helped him stay safe. He was able to rest and recover during the rest of the flight. He returned to Earth safely after spending about 295 hours in space.

After he left NASA, Irwin lived a life focused on his faith. He became a very devoted Christian and started the High Flight Foundation. He traveled to places like Mount Ararat in Turkey to lead expeditions. Irwin lived until August 8, 1991, when he died after a bicycle ride. He was the first of the twelve men who walked on the Moon to pass away. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Today, schools in Colorado are named in his honor to remember his great adventures.
