After he left NASA, Irwin lived a life focused on his faith. He became a very devoted Christian and started the High Flight Foundation. He traveled to places like Mount Ararat in Turkey to lead expeditions. Irwin lived until August 8, 1991, when he died after a bicycle ride. The mission was a "J-Mission," which focused heavily on science. Because of this, the crew received intensive geological training. This training helped them find the famous Genesis Rock. Irwin also became the first passenger in a Lunar Roving Vehicle. He spent 18 hours and 35 minutes performing extravehicular activities.

During the mission, Irwin faced a serious medical challenge. The crew worked for 23 hours without any sleep. This intense work caused Irwin's heart to develop bigeminy. Bigeminy is a condition where the heart has an irregular rhythm. Doctors on Earth monitored his vital signs closely. They noted the irregularity but felt he was safe. The spacecraft's cabin was filled with 100% oxygen. This helped protect him while in zero gravity. He recovered and finished the mission safely.

After returning to Earth, Irwin's life changed significantly. He became a very devout born-again Christian. He felt his experiences in space made God feel more real. He founded the High Flight Foundation to share his faith. He also led expeditions to Mount Ararat in Turkey. He spent his later years acting as a goodwill ambassador. He often said that his faith was more important than his space travels.

Irwin passed away on August 8, 1991. He died following a bicycle ride after suffering a heart attack. He was the first of the twelve Moon-walking men to die.
