The city is a very important place for the local area. It serves as the headquarters for the Jalgaon district. It is also near the famous Ajanta Caves, which are 76.3 km away.

Many people call Jalgaon the "Banana city of India." This is because the farmers in the district grow a huge amount of fruit. They grow about two-thirds of all the bananas in Maharashtra. The weather here helps the plants grow, but it can be very intense. The climate is hot and semi-arid. This happens because of the rain shadow from the Western Ghats. There are three main seasons: a hot season, a wet monsoon season, and a cool season. Temperatures can reach as high as 48 degrees Celsius.

Learning is a big part of life in Jalgaon. The Kaviyatri Bahinabai North Maharashtra University is located just 8 km from the city.

The city has three different medical colleges for students. There is also the Anubhuti Residential School. It was founded in 2007 by Bhavarlal Jain. The school sits on a 100-acre wooded hillside. Its name means "experience" in the Sanskrit language. It is even known as a green school.

Traveling to and from the city is quite easy. The Jalgaon Junction railway station connects the city to many big places. You can take a train to New Delhi, Mumbai, or even Kolkata. There is also a Jalgaon Airport located southeast of the city center. It was first built in 1973 by the Public Works Department. In 2010, Pratibha Patil laid the foundation stone to help expand it. Now, many airlines fly to places like Goa, Hyderabad, and Pune.

There are many special places for visitors to see in the region. Gandhi Teerth is a large museum about the life of Mahatma Gandhi. It opened on March 25, 2012. People also go on pilgrimages to many old temples. The Maharishi Krishna Dvaipayana Vedvysa Temple is a popular spot. There is also the Padmalaya temple, which is one of the three "Shree Ganapati Peeth" in India. These sites show the long and interesting history of the land.
