She served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for over fourteen years. She held this position for six different terms between 1991 and 2016. Many people affectionately called her "Amma," which means mother. She was the longest-serving leader of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, or AIADMK. This is a Dravidian political party. She was also the first female Chief Minister in the Republic of India to die while in office.

Before entering politics, Jayalalithaa was a famous film actress.

She joined his party in 1982 while he was in power. Her rise within the party was very fast. She soon became the propaganda secretary for the AIADMK. She was also elected to the Rajya Sabha, which is the upper house of India's Parliament. After M. G. Ramachandran died in 1987, she claimed to be his political heir. She fought against other factions to become the sole leader of the AIADMK.

Her political career involved many periods of great power and difficult challenges.

In 1991, she became the youngest Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. She was known for centralizing state power among a small group of officials. However, her government faced many setbacks. In the 1996 election, the AIADMK lost most of its seats. Jayalalithaa lost her own seat in that election as well. The new government filed 28 corruption cases against her. These legal battles resulted in her spending time in jail. Despite these hardships, she managed to return to power multiple times.

Jayalalithaa's leadership style was often described as intense.

They suggested she demanded absolute loyalty from her ministers and legislators. In 2001, she was briefly disqualified from holding office due to legal issues. However, she was acquitted six months later and returned to her role. She proved her resilience by winning many more elections in the years that followed.
