He incorporates elements of electronica, house, Latin trap, and R&B into his work. His early musical inspirations came from rock groups like Metallica and Nirvana. He also studied the style of the reggaeton artist Daddy Yankee. Balvin often uses collaborations to expand his sound. He has worked with Latin artists like Ozuna and Bad Bunny. Balvin's personal history shaped his unique perspective on the world. He was born on May 7, 1985, into an upper-middle-class family in Medellín. His father worked as an economist and a business owner. However, his father's business eventually went bankrupt. This caused the family to lose their home and their car. They had to move to a poorer neighborhood. Balvin noted that he felt comfortable moving between both rich and poor worlds. At age 16, he joined an English-exchange program in Oklahoma. He later moved to New York City to study English and music. While living on Staten Island, he worked as a dog walker. He also worked as a roofer and a house painter in the United States.
