Martínez Ocasio was born on March 10, 1994, in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. He grew up in the Almirante Sur area of Vega Baja. His father, Benito Martínez, worked as a truck driver. His mother, Lysaurie Ocasio, is a retired schoolteacher. Music was a constant part of his childhood. His parents listened to salsa, merengue, and pop ballads. His earliest musical memory involves receiving a record by the reggaetón pioneer Vico C at age five. He also sang in his church choir until he was 13 years old.

His path to stardom involved both study and manual labor. After high school, he enrolled in an audiovisual communications program at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo. He hoped to become a radio host. While studying, he worked as a cashier and bagger at an Econo supermarket. He eventually left university to pursue music full-time. He noted that he came from a small area, rather than a large metropolis like San Juan. His stage name, Bad Bunny, came from an experience where he was forced to wear a bunny costume. He believed the name would market well.

Bad Bunny's professional career began to accelerate in 2016. His song "Diles" helped him secure a contract with the label Hear This Music. He soon released "Soy Peor," which reached number 19 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart. In 2018, he collaborated with Cardi B and J Balvin on "I Like It." This single reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. He also released "Mía" featuring Drake, which reached the top five on the same chart.
