Novello's career worked in many different ways through music and acting. He often wrote the music and the story for his own big musical shows. He frequently worked with a writer named Christopher Hassall, who wrote the lyrics. These shows were often in the style of operetta, which is a type of light musical play. He also acted in many silent films and later in movies with sound. Sometimes he would write for other people, like the famous actor Noël Coward. He even wrote dialogue for the famous movie character Tarzan.
