This governorate is home to many different places. It has four kism and five markaz. It also has one new city. These parts help organize the land and the people.

Water is very important to this region. An Ismailia Canal runs from the Nile River to the Suez Canal. This canal reaches the city of Ismailia at Lake Timsah. Long ago, people built this canal for a reason. It provided fresh water to the workers building the Suez Canal. Today, people still use the water for fishing. There are official fishing landing sites at Lake Timsah and Bitter Lake.

You can see boats on the water in these areas.

History has shaped the Ismailia Governorate in many ways. It was named after a man named Ismail Pasha. He was the Ottoman Viceroy of Egypt. He was in charge while the Suez Canal was being built. The area also saw many difficult times during wars. From 1967 to 1970, Ismailia was a war zone. Battles took place in and around the area. After a cease-fire in 1973, the people began to rebuild.

Many people live in this part of Egypt. In January 2023, the population was about 1,479,511 people. Most of these people live in rural areas. In 2015, about 807,813 people lived in the countryside. Only 671,678 people lived in urban cities. Several towns have more than 15,000 people. These include Abu Suwir, Tell El Kebir, and Fayid. The city of Ismailia is much larger. It had about 386,372 people in 2017. There are also many industrial zones like Technology Valley.

Ismailia is a place of culture and helping hands. Hashim El Nahas started an international film festival here. It celebrates short films and documentaries every year. This festival is supported by the Ministry of Culture. The United Nations also works in the governorate. They ran a programme called SGIP to help local communities. This project started after a successful programme in 1992. It helps make life better for the people living there. This makes the governorate a very active place to live.
