An islet is a very small island. The name comes from an old French word called "islette."

Most islets are too small for people to live on. They often have very few plants growing on them. Some islets are just a few square feet in size. Others can be as large as several square miles.

These landforms can be found in many different types of water. They might sit in the middle of a vast ocean. They can also be found in lakes or flowing rivers. Some are made of solid rock or fine sand. Others are built from hard coral.

There are many different ways to describe these small places. People use different names depending on where they are in the world. In the Caribbean, a sand islet is often called a cay or a key. In Polynesia, a reef islet made of coral is called a motu.

In Scotland, people use the word "inch" for small islands. In England, small islands in the River Thames are called an "ait" or "eyot." Some islets are even called "skerries" in Ireland. These names help people describe exactly what the land is made of.

Some islets change depending on the movement of the water. A tidal island is connected to the mainland during low tide. When the tide comes in, the water covers the path. This leaves the islet isolated by a channel of water.

Other islets are just small rocks sticking out of the sea. These might be called sea stacks if they are thin and vertical. Some islets are even parts of a larger group called an atoll. These small pieces of land are often called subsidiary islets.

Islets can be very important in international law. There is a rule called Article 121 in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. This rule talks about what happens if an islet is just a rock. If a rock cannot support human life, it has fewer special rights. This can lead to big arguments between different countries.

For example, Romania and Ukraine once had a dispute over Snake Island. The International Court of Justice sometimes looks at these small places to settle fights. This shows that even a tiny bit of land matters a lot.

There are thousands of islets scattered across our entire planet. The Stockholm archipelago in Sweden has about 24,000 islands and islets. You can find them in the Arctic Ocean or the South Pacific. Some famous examples include Rockall in the North Atlantic. You can also find them in the Florida Keys or near Hawaii.
