Iskandar Muda was a very powerful leader in Indonesia. He was the twelfth Sultan of the Aceh Darussalam sultanate. Under his rule, Aceh became the strongest and wealthiest state in its region. His name means "young Alexander." People often compared his many conquests to those of Alexander the Great. Aceh also became a famous international center for trade and Islamic learning.

His power came from a very large and organized military. He had a navy of heavy ships that carried 600 to 800 men each. His army used Persian horses and a special corps of elephants. He also had more than 2,000 cannons and guns. These weapons came from both Sumatra and Europe. This military strength helped him control much of northern Sumatra.

Iskandar Muda's path to the throne was full of changes. He was born around 1583 or 1593. In 1605, he had a disagreement with his uncle, Sultan Ali Ri'ayat Syah III. He fled to a place called Pidië to plan a rebellion. He was even sent to prison for a short time. However, he fought well against a Portuguese invasion in 1606. When Sultan Ali died on April 4, 1607, Iskandar Muda became the Sultan.

Iskandar Muda was a very strict and sometimes harsh ruler. He wanted total control over his people and his nobles. He used many different punishments for those who did not obey him. He even executed his own son, Crown Prince Meurah Pupok. Despite this, many people in Aceh today see him as a hero. His name is still used for important places like an airport.
