In old texts, Ishvara could mean a king or a ruler. It could also mean a husband or a soul. In the middle ages, it often meant a god or a supreme being. Some groups see Ishvara as the god Shiva. Other groups see Ishvara as the god Vishnu. Some people pick a favorite god to call Ishvara.

Different schools of thought have their own views. The Yoga school sees Ishvara as a special guide. This guide helps people on a spiritual path. In the Advaita Vedanta school, Ishvara is a form of Brahman. Brahman is the ultimate reality that connects everything.

Some thinkers do not use the word Ishvara. The Samkhya school often does not think it is needed. The Vaisheshika school added the idea much later. They believed Ishvara made the laws of nature. He did not make the world itself. Instead, he let these laws run the world.
