Isaac Casaubon was a famous scholar. He spent his life studying old books. He was a master of Greek. This skill helped him study many ancient texts. He was a philologist, which is a person who studies language.

Isaac grew up in a difficult time. His family had to hide in a mountain cave. It was there that he learned his first Greek lessons. Later, he became a professor in Geneva. He loved books so much that he spent all his money on them. He even copied books that were not easy to find.

Isaac lived in France and England. In Paris, he worked as a librarian. He was a very well-known man there. He also met King Henry IV of France. Later, he moved to England. King James I welcomed him with great honor. The King even gave him a yearly pension.

Life in England was not always easy. Some people were angry at him because he was French. They broke his windows. They were even unkind to his children. Isaac could read English, but he could not speak it. This made it hard for him to make new friends. Still, he remained a great man of learning.
