The Ionian Revolt was a major conflict between Greek regions and the Persian Empire.

This rebellion lasted from 499 BC to 493 BC. It involved several Greek areas in Asia Minor, like Ionia, Aeolis, and Doris. It also included revolts in Cyprus and Caria. The people in these Greek cities were unhappy with Persian rule. The Persian kings used local leaders called tyrants to govern them. These tyrants often struggled to keep both the people and the Persians happy. This tension eventually grew into a large military rebellion.

The revolt began because of a failed mission by a leader named Aristagoras. He was the tyrant of the city of Miletus. In 499 BC, Aristagoras tried to conquer the island of Naxos. He asked the Persian official Artaphernes for help with an army. The mission was a disaster and failed after a four-month siege.

Aristagoras feared he would lose his position because of this failure. To save himself, he encouraged the Ionian cities to revolt against King Darius the Great. He even stepped down as tyrant to make Miletus a democracy.

Fighting broke out across the region in the following years. In 498 BC, the Ionians received help from Athens and Eretria.

Together, they marched on and burned the city of Sardis. However, the Persians followed them back to Ionia. The Greeks suffered a big defeat at the Battle of Ephesus. This was the only time the Ionians went on the attack. After that, they had to spend most of the war defending their homes.

The Persian response was strong and came from many sides. In 497 BC, the Persians launched a three-pronged attack.

The revolt spread to Caria, so the Persian army moved there. A large Persian army under Daurises was defeated in an ambush at the Battle of Pedasus. But by 494 BC, the Persians regrouped their ships and soldiers. They attacked Miletus, the center of the revolt. The Ionian fleet was beaten at the Battle of Lade after some allies left.

Miletus was then captured and put under Persian rule.

This revolt changed the history of the ancient world. It was the first big fight in the Greco-Persian Wars.

Even though the Persians won, King Darius was angry. He wanted to punish Athens and Eretria for helping the Ionians. He also saw that the Greek city-states were a threat to his empire. This led to the first Persian invasion of Greece in 492 BC. Much of what we know comes from the historian Herodotus, who lived in this region.
