It is spoken in many northern areas. These places include parts of Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec. People also speak it in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. For many Inuit, this language is how they express their feelings. It is a way to stay linked to their identity. Some people call all Inuit languages Inuktut. This is a large group of related ways of speaking.

Learning Inuktitut can happen in many different ways. Long ago, Inuit people learned through listening and doing. They used the language to describe the world around them. Later, teachers used Inuktitut to help children learn in school. Now, many schools use immersion programs to teach kids. These programs help students learn in their mother tongue.

Some people use special symbols called syllabics to write. Others use a Latin alphabet with letters like English. In 2019, a new way called Inuktut Qaliujaaqpait was made. This way uses Latin letters so it is easy to type on computers.

The history of the language has seen many changes. Before Europeans arrived, Inuktitut was only a spoken language. Missionaries from different churches were the first to teach in schools. They helped create writing systems for the language. In 1928, the first residential school for Inuit opened. At that time, English became the main language for school. This was a hard time for the language. Many people were told to use English at school and work.

By the 1960s, people began to value Inuktitut more. They saw it as a language worth saving. In 1969, most Inuit voted to change how schools worked. They wanted to teach in Inuktitut, English, and French. In 1984, Inuktitut became an official language in the Northwest Territories. In 1999, Nunavut was formed as a new territory. Inuktitut is an official language there alongside Inuinnaqtun.

In Nunatsiavut, it became the government language in 2005. Many places now have laws to protect the language.

Inuktitut has many different dialects, which are local ways of speaking. In Nunavik, Quebec, people speak a dialect called Inuktitut. In Nunatsiavut, Labrador, the people call their language Nunatsiavummiut. The South Baffin dialect is very common in Nunavut. This is because much of the media comes from Iqaluit.

The language is also very interesting to study. It uses many small pieces called suffixes to build words. One long word can mean a whole sentence in English. For example, one word can describe going to the airport. This makes the language very rich and detailed.
