In Canada, these areas are often called Inuit Nunangat. The Inuit have their own group of languages. These belong to the Eskaleut language family. Many people use the word Inuit to describe themselves. This is a way to honor their own identity.

Inuit history is a story of movement and adaptation. They are descendants of the Thule people. The Thule emerged from the Bering Strait and western Alaska around 1000 CE.

They moved eastward across the Arctic. They had special advantages that helped them succeed. For example, they used dogs as animals for transport. They also developed larger weapons and new technologies. These tools helped them live in a very tough environment. By 1100 CE, they had reached west Greenland.

As the Inuit moved, they met other groups of people. They encountered the Dorset culture, which was the last major Paleo-Eskimo group. Inuit legends sometimes call the Dorset people "giants" or "dwarfs."

The Inuit also interacted with groups further south. This included the Cree and the Innu. Sometimes these meetings led to trade between different cultures. Other times, there were disagreements over land and boundaries. These interactions shaped how different groups lived near one another.

Contact with Europeans changed Inuit life in many ways. The first well-documented contact was with Martin Frobisher in 1576.

Later, Basque whalers worked the Labrador coast. Inuit sometimes raided these stations to get iron tools.

Sadly, Europeans also brought new infectious diseases. These illnesses caused many deaths among the Inuit people. This led to big changes in their social lives.
