An internet forum, often called a message board, is a digital platform for online discussion.

Users participate by posting messages to hold conversations with others. Unlike chat rooms, forum messages are typically longer than a single line of text. They are also archived, meaning the messages are saved for people to read later. The term "forum" actually comes from the public meeting places in Ancient Rome. Today, these platforms serve as vital spaces for building virtual communities around shared interests.

Technically, forums are web applications designed to manage user-generated content. They often follow a hierarchical or tree-like structure to keep discussions organized. At the top level, a forum is divided into broad categories. Beneath these are subforums, which are smaller, more specific sections. The lowest level consists of topics, which are also known as threads. Within a thread, users can start a discussion and others can reply.

There are three main ways to display these messages. A non-threaded format is best when messages are not related to one another. A semi-threaded format works well when a user has a topic and multiple replies. A fully threaded format is used when users reply to specific replies, creating a complex chain.

This structure helps readers follow the flow of a complex argument. Software for these sites is written in many programming languages, such as PHP, Perl, Java, or ASP. These packages can range from simple text-only systems to advanced tools using BBCode for formatting.

Modern forums evolved from older technologies like bulletin board systems (BBS) and computer conferencing. In the late 1970s, these systems functioned similarly to Usenet networks. A major milestone occurred in 1979 when students at Duke University created an online platform with Usenet. Another early example is the Delphi Forums, which began in 1983 and grew to include four million members. Web-based forums began to emerge around 1994 with projects like the W3 Consortium's WIT project.

Forums are used globally on a massive scale. In Japan, the 2channel forum sees over two million posts every single day. China also hosts millions of posts on platforms like Tianya Club. People use these spaces for everything from video games and music to politics and religion. Some threads even become famous, such as a lonely person's post on MovieCodec.com that Wired magazine called a "top hangout" for lonely people.

Different levels of access define how people interact with a forum. An unregistered user is a guest or visitor who can often read content but cannot change the database. Registered members must log in to post messages. Some members are called "lurkers" because they frequently read discussions without ever posting. Moderators, or "mods," are users granted special privileges to manage the community. They can delete spam, move threads, or ban users who break the rules.

Online discussion platforms also play important roles in education and government. In classrooms, platforms like the interactive e-learning community (iELC) help physics students discuss formulas and concepts. In smart cities, forums help with policy-making. For example, Rotterdam uses a "City townhall" platform for participation. In Afghanistan, the D-Agree platform uses artificial intelligence to facilitate discussions. It uses an issue-based structure to classify ideas, pros, and cons in real time.
