People use these platforms to post messages and share their thoughts. Forums are different from chat rooms because the messages are often longer. They are also archived, which means they are saved so people can read them later. A single conversation in a forum is called a thread or a topic. This name comes from the old forums used in Ancient Rome.

\n\nForums work using a tree-like structure to keep things organized. At the top, you will find large categories. Under these categories, there are smaller sections called subforums. Each subforum contains many different topics or threads. Within a thread, many people can join in by posting replies. Some forums use a fully threaded format where replies respond to other replies. This makes it easy to follow a long chain of ideas.

In 1979, students at Duke University helped create Usenet, an early discussion platform. One of the first major forum sites is Delphi Forums. It started in 1983 and once had four million members. Earlier web-based forums began appearing around 1994. Today, forums are very popular in many countries.

\n\nDifferent people have different jobs on a forum. A guest is a visitor who can usually read posts without an account. A registered member must log in to post their own messages. Some members are \"lurkers\" who only read and do not post. Moderators, or \"mods," are people who manage the forum. They keep the community clean by deleting spam. They can also move threads or ban users who break the rules.
