Internet culture is a complex set of practices, norms, and shared references. These emerge through networked communication across various digital platforms. It includes specific languages, rituals, humor, and entire genres of content. It also encompasses the communities, identities, and collaborative forms native to online environments. This culture is not random. It is shaped by technical architecture, platform governance, and the political economy of data. These factors determine how people find audiences and cooperate. They also influence how people contest power in digital spaces. Today, internet culture is a universal language connecting people globally.

Digital platforms act as the primary infrastructure for this culture. They are not neutral containers for information. Instead, they actively mediate how we express ourselves. Each platform has specific affordances, which are features that allow certain actions. For example, wikis like Wikipedia use version control and talk pages. These tools allow for large-scale, collaborative knowledge building. Other platforms, like Reddit or Stack Overflow, use thread-based conversation.

These sites often rely on volunteer moderators and specific posting norms. Social networking services like Instagram or TikTok use profiles and feed-based interfaces. These designs shape how users present themselves and how they see others. Even messaging apps like WhatsApp or Signal impact culture through encryption and private group chats.

Internet culture has several distinct types of communities and practices. One major group is participatory fan networks. These fans extend stories and coordinate creative labor in public. Another group includes hacker and free software communities. These members focus on peer review and openness. Influencer cultures are also prominent. They merge self-branding with algorithmic engagement to build economies. There are also niche communities built around very specialized interests. Some networks are even decentralized, using open protocols like ActivityPub. This allows for distributed control rather than central management. These different structures change how people interact and find meaning.

This digital way of life has deep historical roots. Many features began with amateur radio, zines, and science fiction fandom. These groups established patterns of peer-to-peer communication and shared lore. From the 1970s through the 1990s, sociality formed on bulletin board systems (BBS) and Usenet.

These spaces helped users learn jargon and moderation practices. A major turning point occurred in September 1993. This is known as the "eternal September." It happened when America Online provided Usenet access to its massive user base. This caused a continuous influx of new users. These newcomers were often unfamiliar with established netiquette. This event changed the cyclical nature of online community growth forever.

The landscape of the internet has also changed linguistically. Early digital culture was centered mostly in the Anglosphere. This was because the internet began as a British-American invention. Most textual coding systems were also designed for the English language. Consequently, English-language content dominated the web for a long time. In the 1990s, English content made up approximately 80% of the internet. However, the linguistic landscape has become much more diverse over time. By 2018, the proportion of English content had declined to 52.9%. This shift reflects the growing global participation in digital spaces.

A key element of this culture is the meme. Scholar Limor Shifman defines memes as groups of digital items. These items are circulated, imitated, and transformed across different platforms.

Memes can take many forms, such as image macros or short videos. They function as units of cultural exchange. This exchange is driven by digital reproduction and network effects. People also engage in "remixing." This is a form of vernacular creativity. Creators borrow from existing media and use hyperlink technologies to attribute sources. They iterate on formats in public to build something new.

Finally, internet culture involves complex questions of identity and credibility. Users negotiate their identities through handles, avatars, and profiles.

While pseudonymity allows for experimentation, it can also enable harassment. Credibility is established through various technical and social factors. These include anonymity, connection to physical identity, and comment rating systems. Some studies show that people find online information quite credible. However, credibility still relies on the architecture of the community. This includes how moderation and feedback types are handled. These systems ultimately shape how we trust and interact with the digital world.
