An induction furnace is a special tool for melting metal.

It is a very clean way to work. Most other tools use burning fuel to make heat. This can create a lot of dust and pollution. Many iron foundries now use induction furnaces instead. They replace older cupola furnaces to keep the air cleaner. These machines are great for melting iron and steel. They also work for copper, aluminum, and precious metals.

This furnace works through a process called induction heating. First, metal is placed inside a nonconductive crucible. This is a container that holds the metal charge. A coil of copper wire wraps around the crucible. A powerful alternating current flows through this wire. This current creates a magnetic field that moves very fast. The field goes deep into the metal. It creates circular electric currents called eddy currents. These currents move through the metal and create heat. This is known as Joule heating.

In some metals like iron, another thing happens. This is called magnetic hysteresis. It happens when the tiny parts of the metal flip back and forth. This also helps make the metal hot. Once the metal turns into a liquid, the currents stir it. This vigorous stirring makes sure the melt is well mixed. The heat comes from inside the metal itself. It does not come from an outside flame. This helps keep the metal pure and clean.

Different furnaces have different sizes and powers. Some melt less than one kilogram of metal. Others can melt huge amounts up to one hundred tons. Power supplies can range from 10 kW to 42 MW. A one-ton furnace can melt iron in about one hour. The machines use different frequencies to work. These frequencies can go from 50 Hz to 400 kHz or higher. Smaller melts usually use a higher frequency. Lower frequencies are used to help stir the metal.

Working with these machines is a sensory experience. An induction furnace often makes a loud hum or whine. This sound comes from fluctuating magnetic forces. Workers can actually listen to the pitch of the sound. The sound helps them know if the furnace is working right. It also tells them what the power level is. Using these tools is like using a giant, electric magnet to cook. It is a smart way to handle heavy metals safely.
