An induction furnace is a tool used to melt metal.

It works in a very clean way. Most other tools use fire or burning fuel. This can make a lot of dust. An induction furnace does not use fire. It also does not use an arc. An arc is a bright spark of power.

Inside the machine is a crucible. This is a container that holds the metal. A coil of copper wire goes around it. A strong electric current flows through the wire. This creates a magnetic field. This field moves in and out very fast. It goes deep into the metal.

The field makes tiny circles of electricity inside the metal. We call these eddy currents. These currents move through the metal. This movement makes the metal get very hot. This is called Joule heating. The heat comes from inside the metal itself. This helps keep the metal pure.

Once the metal melts, the currents stir it. This makes sure the liquid metal is well mixed. The machine may make a loud hum or whine. Workers listen to the sound to check the power level.
