A blast furnace is a huge, tall oven used to make metal.

Most of the time, these furnaces produce pig iron. This is a material that serves as a middle step for making steel. Steel is used for many things like cars, ships, and big machines. The word "blast" comes from the way hot air is pushed into the furnace. This air is blown in at a higher pressure than the air around us.

Because they are hard to start and stop, these furnaces run continuously for a long time.

The way it works is a step-by-step process of chemical changes.

First, people put fuel called coke, metal ores, and a cleaning material called flux into the top. These materials fall downward through the furnace. At the same time, a hot blast of air is blown into the bottom through pipes called tuyeres.

As the materials fall, they meet hot gases rising from below. This is called a countercurrent exchange. The rising gas, which is rich in carbon monoxide, takes oxygen away from the ore. This leaves behind liquid metal at the bottom. The flux reacts with impurities like silica to create slag. This slag floats on top of the molten metal so it can be removed.

People have been making iron for a very long time.

In China, cast iron was found as far back as the 5th century BC. The earliest known blast furnaces in China date to the 1st century AD during the Han dynasty. These early furnaces had walls made of clay. In the West, blast furnaces appeared during the High Middle Ages. They spread from the region of Wallonia in Belgium during the late 15th century. By 1491, they were being used in England.

Many inventors helped make the process better over the years.

In 1709, a British inventor named Abraham Darby found a way to use coke instead of charcoal. Using coke was a big change from using charcoal. Later, in 1828, James Beaumont Neilson patented a way to preheat the air. This is called a "hot blast" and it makes the furnace more efficient. These changes helped the industry grow much larger. Today, these furnaces are very important, but they also release greenhouse gases into the air.

You can think of a blast furnace like a giant, continuous filter.

Just as a filter catches bits of dirt, the furnace uses chemistry to separate pure metal from rocky ore. The metal we use every day often starts its life in this intense heat. When you see a large steel building or a heavy machine, it likely began as pig iron. The process turns heavy rocks into the strong materials that build our modern world. It is a way of using heat and air to unlock the treasures hidden inside the Earth.
