This article covers sensitive topics: politics. Parents can manage visibility in Parental Controls.

Indoctrination is a way of teaching a specific set of ideas. This process is often called inculcating. It means teaching through repeated instruction. People often use this word when they think the teaching is unfair. In these cases, the goal is to teach a belief without asking for critical analysis. Critical analysis is when a person asks questions to understand something deeply. Some people think indoctrination is just a part of how we learn culture. Others see it as a way to stop people from thinking for themselves.

This teaching can happen in many different ways. It often moves through the state or through schools. It can also come from religions, the arts, or the media. In a political setting, some see it as a tool for control. For example, it can be used to keep things exactly as they are. It can also happen in democratic countries or in strong, authoritarian ones. The goal is often to turn people into a specific type of citizen. This can be done through many different paths in a society.

The history of this word has changed over time. Originally, the term meant simple education. However, things changed after World War I. After that time, the word took on a more negative meaning. It became similar to words like propaganda or brainwashing. One big example happened in Germany during World War II. The Nazi government used indoctrination in politics, culture, and schools. After the war, democratic nations tried to fix this. They used a process called re-education to teach new ideas about democracy.

Different groups use indoctrination for different reasons. Some religions use it to teach their core rules, or doctrines. For instance, some groups use personality tests to bring in new members. In the past, the Soviet Union used schools to teach atheism. This meant they taught people not to believe in gods. In Albania, children were taught to be atheists from kindergarten on. After the leader Enver Hoxha died in 1985, things began to change. By 1990, the ban on religious practice in Albania was officially lifted.

Even the military and security experts use this word. In the military, it is the first step of training a soldier. It is not seen as a bad thing there. In information security, it is a specific type of briefing. This happens right before a person is allowed to see secret information. There is also a debate about the line between school and indoctrination. In 2025, the UK Supreme Court made a ruling on this. They said religious education must be objective and critical to avoid being indoctrination. This helps ensure that learners keep their right to think for themselves.
