This article covers sensitive topics: politics. Parents can manage visibility in Parental Controls.

A police state is a type of government with extreme control. In these places, the government has very little difference between the law and its political power. The state uses police and security forces to help run the country. This often means that people have fewer freedoms than in a democracy. They might face limits on where they can travel. They may also face limits on what they can say or write.

Control in a police state works in many ways. Governments might use secret police forces to watch citizens. These groups often work outside the normal rules of the law. Some governments use technology to keep track of people. This is sometimes called an electronic police state. In these cases, the government uses computers to record and search for information about citizens. They might use data to monitor how people live and move.

History shows many different examples of this kind of rule. In ancient China, King Li of Zhou used strict censorship and surveillance. People were so afraid that they only used eye contact to greet each other. In the 4th century BCE, the state of Qin used a system to track households. They made groups of five people responsible for reporting each other. Later, in 1565, Tsar Ivan IV of Russia used a group called the Oprichnina to rule. In the 1930s, the term became more common to describe totalitarian governments in Europe.

Many famous leaders and places have been linked to these ideas. Nazi Germany used the SS and the Gestapo to control its people. In South Africa, the apartheid system restricted movement and banned groups. The Duvalier family in Haiti used a force called the Tonton Macoutes to stop political opposition. In Syria, the Assad family used the Mukhabarat to control the population. North Korea is also known for having very strict rules and censorship.

Understanding a police state helps us see how different governments work. It is often described as a balance or a scale. On one side is individual freedom. On the other side is national security. Any law that takes away liberty moves the scale toward a police state. Any law that limits how much the government watches people moves it toward a free state. This idea is even used in stories, like George Orwell's book 1984.
