Each season follows specific rules to keep the games exciting. Teams can use a special substitute called an "impact player." This player can join the game when a wicket falls.
Teams also use a Decision Review System, or DRS. This helps them check if an umpire's decision was correct. Each team gets two chances to use this review per innings. There are also "strategic time-outs" during the matches. One is for the bowling team and one is for the batting team. These breaks last two and a half minutes each.
The IPL began in 2007 when the BCCI launched it.
A man named Lalit Modi helped lead this big project. The first season officially started in April 2008 in New Delhi. Before the IPL, there was a different league called the ICL. The BCCI did not recognize that league at all. They even banned players who joined it. By 2009, the ICL had to shut down completely. The IPL grew quickly from its start in 2008.
There are ten city-based teams in the league today. Some teams have changed their names over the years. For example, the Delhi Daredevils became the Delhi Capitals in 2019.
The Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are very successful. They have both won five titles each. In 2025, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru won the championship. They defeated the Punjab Kings in a big final. The winners received ₹20 crore for their hard work. The runners-up earned ₹12 crore for their effort.
The success of the IPL has changed sports in many ways. It inspired other Indian sports leagues to start. Now, owners of IPL teams also own teams in other countries. They have teams in the West Indies and South Africa. Some even have teams in the USA and the UAE.
There is even a women's version called the Women's Premier League. It started in 2022 and had its first season in 2023. The IPL continues to grow and connect fans everywhere.
The Indian Premier League, commonly known as the IPL, is a professional Twenty20 cricket league based in India.
Organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), it utilizes a fast-paced franchise model. The league is a global leader in sports, ranking as the richest cricket league and the 11th richest sporting league in the world by revenue. It is also the most viewed Indian sports event according to the Broadcast Audience Research Council. The tournament takes place annually between March and May. Because of its importance, the International Cricket Council provides an exclusive window for the IPL in its Future Tours Programme. This scheduling often results in fewer international cricket tours occurring during the IPL season.
The league operates under specific technical rules that differentiate it from traditional cricket. Each match includes two "strategic time-outs" lasting two and a half minutes each. One timeout is designated for the bowling team between the 6th and 9th overs. The other is for the batting team between the 13th and 16th overs. Teams also utilize the Decision Review System, or DRS, to challenge on-field umpire decisions. Since 2023, teams can use these reviews to contest wides and no-balls. Additionally, the "impact player" rule allows teams to use a substitute from a list of five named players. This substitution can occur when a wicket falls, a batter retires, or at the end of an over. Teams must also manage their rosters carefully, as they can include a maximum of four overseas players in their playing eleven.
The league's history is marked by intense competition and rapid growth. In April 2007, the Essel Group launched the Indian Cricket League (ICL). However, the BCCI did not recognize the ICL and imposed lifetime bans on players who joined it. This rivalry ended in 2009 when the BCCI offered amnesty to ICL players, leading to the ICL's closure. On September 13, 2007, the BCCI officially launched the IPL. Lalit Modi led the initiative, establishing the tournament's format and franchise revenue systems. The first auction for franchises took place on January 24, 2008. While the reserve prices for the original eight franchises were $400 million, the auction ultimately raised $723.59 million. The inaugural season officially commenced in April 2008.
Over the years, the composition of the league has shifted through expansions and terminations. The league began with eight teams, including the Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. In 2011, Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala joined the competition. However, the Kochi franchise was terminated after one season due to failure to pay a 10% bank guarantee. The Deccan Chargers were also terminated in 2012, leading to the rise of Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013. In 2016 and 2017, the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were suspended for two seasons due to a betting scandal. They were temporarily replaced by the Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions. Following recent expansions in 2022, the league now consists of ten city-based teams, including the Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants.
The financial significance of the IPL is immense and continues to grow. In 2023, the league sold its media rights for the next four seasons to Viacom18 and Star Sports for US$6.4 billion. This massive deal valued each individual IPL match at approximately $13.4 million. Prize money is also substantial for the participating athletes. For the 2025 season, the winning Royal Challengers Bengaluru received ₹20 crore. The runners-up, the Punjab Kings, earned ₹12 crore. League rules require that half of any prize money must be distributed among the franchise's players. These figures highlight the IPL's status as a premier global sporting property.
Success in the IPL is measured by both titles and longevity. The Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are the most successful franchises, with five titles each. The league has seen various rebranding efforts, such as the Delhi Daredevils becoming the Delhi Capitals in 2019. The most recent championship was won by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2025. This victory marked a significant milestone for the franchise after defeating the Punjab Kings in the final. The league has also expanded its reach through the Women's Premier League, which began its first season in 2023. This ensures that the popularity of the T20 format extends to female athletes as well.
The influence of the IPL extends far beyond the borders of India. Many IPL franchise owners have used their success to acquire teams in other global leagues. They have established presence in the Caribbean Premier League, the SA20 in South Africa, and the International League T20 in the UAE. Some owners have even moved into the United States through Major League Cricket. In 2025, several IPL owners purchased stakes in teams within "The Hundred" league in the United Kingdom. For example, the RPSG Group purchased a 70% stake in the Manchester Originals. This global network of ownership demonstrates how the IPL has transformed the landscape of professional franchise sports.
