They often sleep in large groups on tree branches. These groups are called colonies.

These bats are nocturnal, which means they are active at night. They sleep during the day and wake up after sunset. Most bats leave their trees 20 to 30 minutes after the sun goes down.

They fly in large swarms to find food. They use their eyes to see where to go. They can fly up to 50 kilometers to find a meal. They are frugivorous, meaning they mainly eat fruit. They also eat nectar from flowers and even some insects.

They love eating mangoes, guavas, and figs.

Scientists have studied these bats for a long time. A Dutch scientist named Coenraad Jacob Temminck named them in 1825. He called them Pteropus medius. There was some confusion about their names for many years. A Danish scientist named Morten Thrane Brünnich used a different name in 1782. Later, a researcher named Mlíkovský argued for the name Pteropus medius in 2012. He used a rule called the Principle of Priority. This rule says the first name given to a species should be the one we use.

They have a black back with grey streaks. Their heads are brown and their underparts are dark brown. They do not have a tail. They have large eyes and simple ears. They have claws on their two wing digits and all five leg digits. Their thumbs have very powerful claws. One bat in captivity lived for over 31 years.

Flying foxes play a big role in nature. They help with seed propagation, which is the way seeds move to new places. When they eat fruit, they drop seeds in their waste. This helps 300 different plant species grow.

They are very important for the banyan tree. Some people call them vermin because they eat fruit from farms. This can be a hard job for farmers. However, the help they give to forests is very important. They are a key part of the world around them.
