There are two main ways to make them. Some were block books. These used a single carved wooden block for each page. Others used movable type. This used small metal pieces for each letter.

Printers worked in big cities. They made books in many languages. Latin was the most common language used.

Many of these books are very rare. About 550,000 copies are kept in libraries today. Most were printed in the North. There are about 30,000 different editions known. Some books have beautiful drawings. One famous book is the Nuremberg Chronicle. It has about 1,250 copies still in existence. These books help us learn about the past.
