Many professionals have a wide repertoire of voices. They often add new ones to follow current events. This makes their shows feel fresh and funny. Some performers are called impersonators if they only do one person. Most people find the voice to be the most impressive part. A great impression sounds just like the real person.

Performing an impression takes a lot of skill. Most artists focus on vocal fidelity to their target. This means their voice sounds very much like the real person. Some performers use props like hats or glasses to help. However, many people now think these items are old-fashioned. The voice is expected to carry the whole act.

Voice actors also use these skills for animated cartoons. They make characters recognizable by using famous sounding voices. Sometimes the joke is just the reference to a celebrity. This helps the audience understand who the character is meant to be.

In Britain, these acts became very popular on television. Mike Yarwood was a huge star from the 1960s to the 1980s. His shows often had more than 10 million viewers.

During the 1970s, many people imitated the character Frank Spencer. He was from a popular show called Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em. In the 1990s, shows like Spitting Image focused on politicians. Later, Alistair McGowan had a show called Big Impression in 1999. Other shows like Dead Ringers and Bo' Selecta! also became well known. Some performers even made musicals about impressions in London.

Some performers there, like Bill Hader, are called master impressionists. They can do over 80 different celebrity voices. Jimmy Fallon also became famous using his comedy routines. In the United States, Frank Caliendo is known for many voices. He has performed as John Madden and George W. Bush. Many modern political impressions were influenced by Vaughn Meader. He became famous in 1962 for his Kennedy impressions.

Impressionists can focus on many different types of art. Some people, like André-Philippe Gagnon, only mimic singing voices. In India, Nerella Venumadhav imitates poets and even Shakespearean scenes.

Performers like Charles Kellogg were popular on stage long ago. Today, these skills are a big part of animation. Voice actors like Mel Blanc helped make cartoons wonderful.
