Impact (mechanics)

An impact is a collision between two objects.

During a hit, both objects slow down quickly. This creates a high force in a short time. This fast hit can cause a lot of damage.

When things hit at normal speeds, they might change shape. This shape change helps soak up the force. The moving power, or kinetic energy, turns into heat and sound. But fast impacts happen too quickly for this. The material does not have time to bend or shake. It acts brittle, which means it breaks easily instead of stretching.

Some tools use impacts to do work. A pile driver uses big hits to build foundations.

An impact wrench uses hits to turn bolts.

These hits work before friction can stop them.

Car makers study impacts to keep people safe. They build a safety cell to protect passengers. The rest of the car is made to crumple. This helps soak up the kinetic energy.

Scientists also use tests to see how strong materials are. They use the Charpy test and the Izod test.
