In the study of mechanics, an impact occurs when two bodies collide.

During this collision, both bodies undergo deceleration, which means they slow down rapidly. This sudden change in speed creates a high force, often called a shock. This force is applied over a very short time period. Generally, a high force applied over a short duration causes more damage than a lower force applied over a longer duration. Understanding these collisions helps scientists protect everything from cars to spacecraft.

When objects collide at normal speeds, they often undergo deformation. Deformation is when an object changes its shape during the hit. In a perfectly inelastic collision, this shape change absorbs most or all of the collision force. From a perspective of conservation of energy, the kinetic energy of the projectile is converted into heat and sound energy. These changes happen because of the vibrations and deformations induced in the struck object. However, these physical processes cannot happen instantaneously.

High-velocity impacts change how materials behave. A very fast impact does not provide enough time for vibrations or deformations to occur. Because of this, the struck material behaves as if it were more brittle than usual. Brittle materials tend to fracture or break rather than bending. This phenomenon is related to time-temperature superposition, where materials act more brittle on short time scales than on long time scales. Consequently, the majority of the applied force goes directly into fracturing the material.

Material properties greatly influence impact resistance. Impact resistance decreases as the modulus of elasticity increases, meaning stiffer materials have less resistance. Conversely, resilient materials offer better impact resistance. Materials can also behave differently during an impact than they do under static loading. For example, ductile materials like steel can become brittle at high loading rates. In some cases, spalling may occur on the reverse side of the impact if the object is not penetrated.

Many tools use these mechanics to perform difficult tasks. A pile driver uses large-scale impacts to create foundations for bridges and buildings. An impact wrench is a device designed to impart torque impacts to bolts. At normal speeds, friction would disperse the force applied to a bolt. However, at impact speeds, the force acts on the bolt to move it before friction can disperse the energy. Similarly, in ballistics, bullets use impact forces to puncture surfaces that might otherwise resist much lower forces.

Impact theory is vital for automotive safety. When vehicles collide, the damage is often localized to the impact zone. The damage increases as the square of the velocity because the impact kinetic energy is calculated as 1/2 mv². To minimize injury, engineers design safety cells to enclose passengers. These cells are reinforced to survive high-speed crashes. The parts of the car shell outside this cell are designed to crumple progressively. This crumpling process dissipates the kinetic energy through deformation.

Impacts can also lead to catastrophic failures in space exploration. The Columbia disaster was caused by impact damage to the Space Shuttle. A chunk of polyurethane foam impacted the carbon fibre composite wing. Although tests had been conducted previously, the foam chunk was much larger than the test chunks used. To protect fragile items during shipping, engineers use protective packaging and cushioning. This helps reduce peak acceleration by extending the duration of the shock.

Scientists use several standardized methods to assess how materials respond to high loading. The Charpy test and the Izod test are two widely used methods for testing materials. Researchers also use ball or projectile drop tests to assess how products handle impacts. The study of impact theory reaches into many fields. It includes the optimization of material processing, the dynamics of granular media, and the biomechanics of human joints, such as the hip and knee.
