An impact happens when two objects collide.

During this hit, both objects slow down very fast. This quick slowing down creates a high force. This force is applied over a very short time. Usually, a high force over a short time causes more damage than a lower force. This is because the energy has to go somewhere quickly.

When things hit at normal speeds, they might change shape. This is called deformation. This shape change helps soak up the force of the hit. The moving power, or kinetic energy, turns into heat and sound. However, fast impacts happen too quickly for this to work. The material does not have time to bend or shake. It acts brittle, which means it breaks easily instead of stretching. This is because materials can act more brittle on short time scales.

Many tools use these quick hits to do hard jobs.

A pile driver uses big hits to build foundations for bridges. An impact wrench uses hits to turn bolts. These hits work before friction can stop them. In ballistics, bullets use impact forces to punch through surfaces. Even a rubber sheet can act like glass at high speeds. It will fracture instead of stretching or vibrating.

Scientists study these hits to keep people safe in cars.

Car makers build a strong safety cell for passengers. The parts of the car outside this cell are made to crumple. This helps soak up the kinetic energy from a crash. Damage increases as the square of the speed in a crash. Scientists use the Charpy test and the Izod test to check materials. They also use ball or projectile drop tests to check products.

Impacts can also cause big accidents in space.

The Columbia disaster happened because of an impact. A chunk of foam hit the wing of the Space Shuttle. This hit damaged the carbon fibre composite wing. Even though tests were done before, the foam chunk was much larger. We can protect fragile items by using cushioning. This helps by making the duration of the shock longer.
