These books were written in 1928 and 1931. They take place during a time called the New Economic Policy. Bender and his friends look for treasure in the real world. They often stay away from the law. This lets the authors show the less good parts of society.

Writing together was a big part of their lives. They wrote many things during the 1920s and 1930s. This included plays and short stories. They also wrote for famous magazines like *Krokodil* and *Ogoniok*. Sometimes they used funny fake names. One name was Tolstoevsky. This name combined two famous writers, Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. Another name they used was Don Busilio. These names helped them play with their humor.

In the 1930s, the two men traveled to the United States. They visited during the Great Depression.

Ilya Ilf took many pictures on this trip. They published a photo essay called "American Photographs." Later, they made a book called *Little Golden America*. The writers were very honest about their travels. They praised things they liked about American life. They also wrote about things they did not like.

Many people still remember their great work today. The writer Vladimir Nabokov called them "wonderfully gifted writers." Their books were even made into many movies. One version was made by Mel Brooks in the US. Even space holds a memory of them. A Soviet astronomer found a small planet in 1982. She named it 3668 Ilfpetrov to honor the duo.
