Ijma is an Arabic word. It means agreement. It refers to the consensus of the Muslim community on Islamic law. Sunni Muslims see it as a secondary source of law. It comes after the Qur'an and the Sunnah.

Many people wonder who should make this agreement. Some say it should only be the first Muslims. Others believe it is the consensus of wise scholars. Some think the whole Muslim world must agree. If only one person disagrees, there is no Ijma. This can be very hard to do in real life. Because of this, it is not used for every rule.

There are different ways to look at Ijma. Some call it ijma al-ummah, which is the whole community. Others call it ijma al-aimmah, which is the agreement of religious leaders. The Shia view of Ijma is different. The Mu'tazilite group does not use it as a source of law at all. If there is no agreement, it is called ikhtilaf. This shows that people have many different ideas about faith.
