Iblis is a central figure in Islamic tradition. He is often recognized as the progenitor of devils, or Shaitan. In many narratives, he is known as the tempter. While the name Iblis is his proper name, the term Shaitan refers to an unequivocal evil force.

He is a significant supernatural entity in Islamic art and literature. His role is often compared to Satan in Christianity. In Sufism, his role as a master of illusion is similar to the Buddhist concept of Mara.

The Quranic account of Iblis explains his fall from grace. According to the text, God created Adam and commanded the angels to prostrate before him. All the angels obeyed this command. However, Iblis refused to bow.

He argued that he was superior to Adam. Iblis claimed he was created from fire, while Adam was made from clay-mud. Because of this haughtiness, God banished Iblis from heaven. He was also condemned to hell, known as Nār.

There is a long-standing theological dispute regarding the nature of Iblis. Scholars disagree on whether he was an angel or a jinn. Some exegetes, following ibn Abbas, suggest he had a heavenly origin as an angel.

Other scholars, such as Hasan al-Basri, argue he was a jinn. This distinction is important because of beliefs regarding free will. Many believe angels are incapable of sinning. If angels cannot sin, then Iblis must be a jinn. This view is held by the Qadariyah and many Mu'tazilites.

Islamic theology, or kalām, explores the relationship between Iblis and divine decree. Sunni Muslims often follow the doctrine of predestination. This means everything happens by divine decree. Under this view, Iblis acts according to his inner nature and God's plan. He is disobedient to the command, but his actions fit into the larger cosmic order. Some groups, like the Hanbalites, suggest Iblis was ignorant of God's true will. Others, like the Ash'arites, believe his unbelief was ultimately caused by God.

Iblis is also known by many different names and titles. One title is 'Father of Bitterness,' derived from the Arabic word for bitter. He is sometimes called 'the enemy of God.'

Some scholars link his name to the concept of talbis, which means confusion. This suggests that God's command caused him confusion. The name Iblis does not appear in pre-Islamic Arabian literature. This suggests it may have origins outside of Arabia, possibly from Ancient Greek or Syriac.

In the mystical tradition of Sufism, Iblis is viewed through a more complex lens. Some Sufis hold an ambivalent view of him. They refer to a concept called 'Satan's monotheism.' In this view, Iblis refused to bow to Adam because he would only bow to the Creator. They see him as a 'true monotheist' who chose exile over worshiping a creation.

However, other thinkers warn against this. The poet Rumi described how Iblis can appear benevolent to hide malevolent intentions.

Ultimately, the figure of Iblis serves several functions in religious thought. He acts as an example of the dangers of arrogance and transgression. The thinker Muhammad Iqbal suggested that Iblis tests humans. These tests help people learn to overcome their selfish tendencies. Iblis is described as the progenitor of tempters. He is not always seen as the original source of evil, but he is the leader of those who mislead.
